A quaint medal day custom, which does not prevail at any other club, is carried through at St. Andrew's. The captainelect for the year plays himself into office by a single stroke. Ho tees up a ball, and a great, crowd of St. Andrews caddies have meantime spread themselves out towards the Swilcan Burn, for, by long custom, whoever first secures the captain's ball is entitled to keep it. As the captain drives off a cannon is fired from, below the clubhouse, and at night, when the last player has holed out. a cannon is again fired, signifying to St. Andrews and the world at large that another medal day has been finished. The custom shows how much the traditions of the famous club are sustained. The ceremony takes place at the autumn meeting of the club. Mr. Horace Hutchinson is the next to go through the ordeal.
