THE MAIN TRUNK LINE.
"FULL SPEED AHEAD'." STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN" . CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Friday. "I EXPECT to band over the North Island Main Trunk railway to the Railways Department on November 1," said the Hon. W. Hall-Jones to a Post representative today. That was, of course, he pointed out. a good deal earlier than had been promised. A policy of "Full speed, ahead!" has been pursued, and the Minister is naturally greatly pleased at the prospect of being able to do better than he promised. The good progress that has been made could have been increased but for difficulties for which the Department is not responsible. "We arc stopped in our raUlaying a mile south of Makatote by the non-completion of the Mongonuiteao bridge," said the Minister. . "Instructions have been given to cart the rails and sleepers to the south side of this bridge. .This will involve considerable expense, but it is more than justified by the saving that will be effected in haulage of ballast from the Ohakunc pits instead of bringing it from as far away as Taumarunui."
