POLICE COURT NEWS.

SLEEPING ON THE ROADWAY. Ax elderly man named John McCann was charged, Defers Mr. 11, W. Dyer, S.M., at the Police Court, yesterday, with being an idle and disorderly person, with insufficient lawfu 1 means of support. Constable LipMJorubd stated that from information he received on Thursday night ho proceeded to Epsom, and found the. defendant, who was wrapped up in a blanket, fast asleep on tho roadway. McCain) had . a small swag for his pillow. Witness aroused the defendant, and took him to the police station. In reply to Mr. Dyer, McOann said he had money in the bank, and had work to go to. Mr. Dyer said ho could not. very well convict the 'defendant on the evidence, and dismissed the information against him, with a •caution not to sleer. on the roadway in future. TALKING TO HIMSELF. James Stewart, an able-bodied man, pleaded not guilty to being an idle and disorderly person, with insufficient, lawful means of support. Evidence was called to show that, about 1,30 a.m. on' June 12, accused was found "talking to himself" in Queen-street. On being questioned by a constable, Stewart made a long, rambling statement., and was subsequently taken to the lookup. Stewart said that he had been working until a fortnight ago, ami promised to leave for the country and look for work. Mr. Dyer remanded accused for a week, in order to 'give Stewart an opportunity of finding work to go to. DOG THAT WOULDN'T SIT DOWN. A young man named Herbert Dayman, for whom Dr. Bam ford appeared, picuded not guilty to cruelly beating a dog on Juno 7. Evidence for tho prosecution was called to the effect that on. the dale in question the defendant suspended the dog in tho air by his tail, and kicked him. Defendant said ho told his dog to sit down," and he refused to do so. Witness then gave him a " hiding," as he deserved if. Hayman was convicted, and fined 20s, and costs 21s.

A SERIOUS CHARGE. A man, about 35 years of ago, named James Pa ton, was charged with indecently assaulting a little girl on June 11. Paton pleaded not guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. ALLEGED THEFT OF SACKS. Robert McCuliough, an old man, known as "Kauri Log," was charged with stealing 24 sacks, valued at Bs, the property of some person or persons unknown. Detective McMahon applied for a week's remand, stating that on Thursday accused was scon by Detective Scott coming down Victoria-street with a wheelbarrow containing the sacks. Knowing the man's character, the detective questioned him about the sacks, and he was unable to give a satisfactory explanation as to how he camo by them. McCuliough was then arrested. The remand asked for was granted. REMANDED. James "Charles Watters, accused of misappropriating moneys belonging to the New Zealand Laundry Company, between February and May last, was further remanded on bail until Wednesday next. Detective McMahon said that there were some 60 witnesses to be produced, unless "the other side" were prepared to admit, the facts alleged. Henry Brown, licensee of the Falls Hotel, Henderson, was charged with several breaches of the Licensing Act in April and May last, including the supply of liquor to a woman named Annie Roach, as agent for Thomas Pink, without receiving money or chequo in payment; supplying Pink with liquor while he (Pink) was in a state of intoxication, and with permitting drunkenness on his licensed promises. On the application of Mr. Singer, who appeared for Brown, the case was adjourned until Friday next. MISCELLANEOUS. For failing to keep on the proper side of the road with his' motor ear, Dr. C. Rober-' ton was fined 10s and costs. John Lewis, an old man, charged with committing two breaches of his prohibition order, was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon. Ernest Goodman and Sam Hap Tu, neither of whom appeared, were each fined 10s, and costs 7s, for leaving their vehicles unattended. A first offender was fined 10s and costs, or in default 48 hours' imprisonment, for drunkenness; another was fined 5s and cost-:, and two others, who did not appear, wero ordered to forfeit the amount of their bail (£1 each).
