".STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER. IK speaking to a Her.u,i> representative •i yesterday regarding the proposed legislation affecting hospital boards, the Hon. G. Fowlds, Minister in charge of hospitals, said that after giving due weight to the resolutions passed by the recent conference of hospital boards, ho would have a Bill prepared, but it was doubtful whether time to (Mai with the matter would be found during this year's session. The members •of the conference, he said, had decided against any alteration in the method, of electing members, of the boards, and he supposed that that was only natural, from their point : of'view, seeing that they were elected un:der.', the-present .system.,.. The sentiment of the.House and the country, was in favour of- the boards being made directly elective, luit'the' question of the franchise was one upon which a difference of opinion existed. Some people .' considered that the Parliamentary franchise ehouid be adopted, but the proposal under the Bill, as previously introduced, gave the right of vote only to ratepayers. -
