AMERICAN POLITICS.
REPUBLICAN CONVENTION. TARIFF -'REVISION URGED. INCREASE OF BATTLESHIPS. By Telegraph—Press Association.— (Received June 17. 9.42 p.m ; New York, June 17. The platform submitted yesterday to an enthusiastic meeting of the National Republican Convention at Chicago, nicknamed " Roosevelt'" Canned Convention, urges such a revision of the tariff as will give the consumer the benefit of the most favourable prices, consistent with the protection of home, industries and labour, and declares that the duty must equal the difference between the American and European cost of production, including a reasonable profit to the American producer. The platform also urges a constant increase of battleships to protect American interests abroad and support Monroeism. One plank recommending legislation to ensure labour organisations against snap judgments by courts in the issue of injunctions, is arousing considerable opposition, and many of Mr. Taft's supporters object to it. Senator Burrows was cheered on pronouncing against divesting the courts of constitutional power.
