TUB CITY ABATTOIRS.

PROPOSED CHILLING ROOM.

In a report presented to the City Council last evening the manager of the abattoirs stated that the abattoir yards were well built, but there were not enough of them. The general equipment so far as arranged for was very good, and the abattoir arrangements as a whole were excellent. He thought the main hall the finest structure of its kind that he had seen, but it should have been one-third larger, as the hanging space would be severely taxed. He also reported that a chilling loom was an absolute necessity, as no method of preserving taw meat was so successful as fresh, dry. cold air. He did not suggest the erection at the present time of a building sufficiently large to store meat for any length of time. but that a chilling room should be erected sufficient to take a larg~ portion of a day's killing, so that in hot, muggy weather the animal heat Could be withdrawn from the meat before it was sent to town. The chilling loom would not be required in winter, but by the inclusion of an icemaking plant working expenses might be considerably reduced. Plans had been prepared and a site chosen.

The question of providing a chilling room at an estimated cost of £7765 was deferred for six months.
