MUNICIPAL SALEYARDS.

IMPORTANT SUGGESTIONS

LIVE STOCK BROKERS' ASSOCIATION

Souk important suggestions were conveyed to the iCity Council last evening by the manager of the abattoirs in a report on the proposed municipal saleyards. The manager pointed out that the benefits of such a scheme would be: —

(a) To the Council: Stock for killing at the abattoirs would be on the spot. The Council would be safeguarded against pecuniary loss by virtu re of the lease to the association.

(b) To buyers: They could obtain all stock at one place in one day, with no driving of stock to slaughter, an important matter, as rest was required by stock after coming a distance before killing. (c) To vendors: Centralisation of buying power and consequent competition.

(d) To auctioneers: Protection against bad debts; reduced expenditure on working expenses; no locking up of capital in yards or lands; keener bidding, therefore better prices and more commission. fat stock could be sold one day and dairy stock another.

The site most suitable, he went on to say, was that part of the Council property fronting Portage Road from the Stock Road to Great South Road, and an area of five acres or more would be required. Paddocking accommodation of considerable area, and near at hand, for fat stock for killing, would be necessary, as butchers would have to buy a week's supply or more in one day. He could only recommend municipal saleyards on these lines, as otherwise a considerable amount of money would be sunk without certainty of return.

It. was agreed that as it would be necessary to make a special order to authorise the raising of a further loan for the completion of the abattoirs a special meeting of the. Council should be held on June 18. and the Mayor was requested to interview the stock salesmen on the suggestions made by the abattoirs manager and report later.
