MAN SEVERELY WOUNDED.

Wellington, Thursday. Last night Mr. Henry Hill Beckett, a Civil servant, who resides at Creswick, was found lying on the Orangikaupapa. road leading to Northland in an unconscious state at half-past nine. There was a wound on his head, and a pool of blood had formed close to where was found.

Dr. Begg was summoned to a house to which Mr. Hill Beckett was conveyed, and on his recommendation the sufferer was taken to the hospital, where lie lies in a very serious condition.

The case is surrounded with some mystery. The injured man may have fallen over a. bank and injured his head, or he may have been assaulted.
