ATHLETIC SPORTS.

FOOTBALL. THE RUGBY GAME. AUCKLAND UNION. A meetlvg of the Management Committee of the Auckland Rugby Union was held last evening in the Sports Club, Mr. M. J. Shcahaa presiding. The following delegates were in attendance:— F. S. Murray, R. H. Froude, C. P. Stiehbury, S. W. Soaierficld, F. J. Ohlson, C. V. Langsford (secretary).

Dominion Maori " Rep." Team: -A communication was received from the New Zealand Rugby Union notifying the union of the date fixed for the Maori representative team with the Britishers at Rotorua.

School Football: The New Zealand Rugby Union invited the Auckland Union to make application for a grant for the encouragement of school football. The sum of £200 is to be devoted this season by the New Zealand Union for that purpose throughout, the Dominion. The Auckland Union decided not to apply for a grant.

Explanation: Tho King's College Old Boys' Club forwarded an explanation of their default on May 23. The explanation was accepted as satisfactory.

Franklin Union: The Franklin Rugby Union wrote asking for a match to be arranged between a "B" team and a "rep." team from the Franklin Rugby Union, to bo played either on a special Saturday or on somo Saturday before one of the interproviucial fixtures. It was decided to discuss the matter at a future meeting.

Northern Rugby Football Union: A letter was received from the secretary of the Northern Rugby Football Union in reference to tho suggested amalgamation of the union with the Whangaroi Union. The N.R.F.U. stated that no communication had been received from the Wharigarei Union in regard to tho amalgamation, and they wanted to know why Whangarei was recognised and not the. Northern Union in the A.R.U. Annual. Mr. Langsford, secretary A.R.U., stated that the Northern Union had not been passed over. The last season's record of the Northern Union had been printed in the Annual, but rfs they had sent in 1907 season's officers it was impossible to publish them. It was decided that the secretary should write fully to the Northern Rugby Football Union.

Referees for Representative Matches: A letter was received from the New Zealand Referees' Association stating that at the annual meeting of the association the following resolution was passed : " That all expenses incurred by any member of the association acting in 'foreign' matches be defrayed by the home union, such expenses to include travelling, hotel, and out-of-pocket expenses to the extent of 10s per day, and such account to be rendered to the home union through the New Zealand Referees' Association." It was resolved to refer the matter to the New Zealand Rugby Union for their interpretation, and also to write to the other unions in New Zealand informing them that the Auckland Union does not feel disposed to suggest outside referees this season, and asking them to follow a similar practice, the union disapproving of the required 10s a day out-of-pocket expenses. The union decided to strictly enforce the rule that the gp.mes must start at 3 p.m., and clubs are requested to accept this notification.

Accidents: A number of accidents were reported, and the applications for insurance grants were admitted in each case. North Shore Ground: .It was decided that the secretary of the union write to the North Shore Club notifying its officers that unless some arrangement be made to keep the spectators from encroaching on the: field of play on the No. 2 ground at Devonport in future the union will require the North Shore second grade team to play their matches at Alexandra Park.

Challenge Match: The Marlborough Union wrote covering a challenge for a Ranfurly shield match, and. asking the Auckland Union to appoint a date as early as possible. A decision as to th i date was deferred.

To Puke Union: Te Puke Union wrote asking for a fixture with the Auckland B "rep.'' team. The union had regretfully to decline the request. Striking a Player: A member of the Marist Bros.' second grade team named Gallagher was reported by the referee for striking an opposing player during a match last Saturday. Tho referee, Mr. Pitts, said he did not see the whole of the incident, and the case was not, in his opinion, a bad one, no malice being shown. The union after taking evidence decided that the case would be met by a caution, and the player was accordingly severely reprimanded. Bad Language on the Lino: The spectator. I'carce, who was reported by _the referee for using bad language on the line towards a player named Hall during the recent Pon-sonby-Newton match at Alexandra Park, was before the union last evening. Mr. R. Oliphant, referee, was also present. Poarce in his statement made a serious allegation against Hall, of the Ponsonby Club, and it was therefore decided to defer' the matter again till next Wednesday, when Hall will be asked to appear and be given an opportunity of disproving the statements.
