THE HOLIDAY.

ONLY PARTIALLY OBSERVED.

Yesterday, the. Prime of Wales" Birthday, was only partially observed as a holiday in the city and suburbs. Besides th<» Government office?, bank*, law, and insura he offices, only a small proportion of business establishment* were closed, and for the most part business proceeded or usual.

Opinions differ as to which day is the better to observe as a public holiday.Empire Day or the Prince of Wale*' Birthday, and until some statutory provision i« made the same division as has occurred this vear will no doubt continue.

Those who observed yesterday as a holiday were favoured with fine weather. The principal attraction was the Auckland Racing Club's meeting at Ellerslie, and .< largo number of people* journeyed out there hr train and tram.

The holiday resulted in good business for the Auckland Art Society's exhibition, the attendance during the after noon and evening being one o> the largest during the season. In the evening the main gallery was filled by an interested throng, and for at least an hour there, was a continual procession of visitors up and down the stairway, Mr. 8. Stuart reports that while no sales of picture* were recorded the ait union tickets were in good demand. The exhibition will be open at the usual hours again to-day.

The matinee performance at the Opera House, in the afternoon, was well attended, as also were the performances at both theatres in the evening.
