THAMES AND PIAKO.

QUESTION OF A FERRY SERVICE.

[BY TELEGRAPH.— OWN" COKItESrOXDKSX.]

Thames. Thursday. A IONi'KBKXCK between the Thames Harbour Board and the Borough Council was held yesterday for the purpose of discussing the best means of opening up commuui cation between the Thames and the Piako district. Considerable, discussion took place 'as to whether a traffic bridge across the Thames River or a ferry sendee was the more suitable, and the majority of those present agreed that a- bridge at the present time would be premature on account of the expense of const-ruction, and that a good ferry service would meet the requirements of the district, to be followed by a bridge at some future period when the district was further advanced. Several resolutions were passed, as follows :—"'That the conference use its best endeavours to get a, sufficient sum of money placed upon the Estimates during the coming session for the establishment of an efficient ferry service across the. Thames River, so as to open up communication with the Piako district, the terminus on the eastern side of the river to be at Kopu. at a point convenient, to the railway station," and " That this confemce strongly objects to a fixed ferry being placed across the Thames River at a- point below what is 'commonly known as Oyer's landing, on account of the serious interference with navigation that would ensue, as well as the danger to life." It was resolved to forward copies of the resolutions to the Minis-, tor for Marine and the Hon. Jas. MeGowan, and that the latter be requested to place on the Estimates a sum sufficient to carry out the recommendation of the conference.
