A STORMY VOYAGE.

. ■«» ; EXPERIENCE. OF THE SQUALL. ' The Union Company's steamer Squall arrived from Gisborne via Whangarei early yesterday morning, after an exceptionally rough passage. The steamer left Gisborne at midnight on Friday last, and experienced fine weather until passing the-East Cape at nine a.m. on Saturday, when a westerly, gale and heavy head sea were encountered. The weather became so bad that Captain Benton decided to put into Hicks' Bay for shelter, and remained there until 10.30 a.m. on the following day. The sea and wind then moderated, and the vessel proceeded on her voyage, Cape Runaway being passed' at 1.30 p.m. the same day. 'A confused sea and a strong breeze prevailed on the run across the Bay of Plenty until Mercury Island was reached, where the wind increased into a moderate gale, compelling the Squall to again seek shelter at Tryphena Buy, Great Barrier.-. The vessel dropped anchor at midnight, and remained there until four a.m. next day, when departure was taken for Whangarei. .Moderate head seas and thick, heavy : rain were then encountered until arriving at Whangarei at 2.30 p.m. on Tuesday. The steamer landed 605 sheep at that port : from Gisborne, and all were in good condition, notwithstanding the had weather •..'which they had gone If rough. •The steamer took her departure from •Whangarei lor Auckland on Wednesday, and was detained in the river for some ■ time owing to a dense fog. _
