At the Police Court this morning Alexander Woods (on remand) was charged with having, on May 1, assaulted George Penneli, and being found on the latter'e premises at night without lawful excuse. Accused, in his evidence, raid he had been drinking on the day previous to May 1, and in the early hours o. the morning in question entered Penneli's place in mistake ,He denied having assaulted informant. The Bench (Messrs.. T. Gilmour and D. :D'ji-'ildson, J.P.'s) convicted accused on the charge of , being unlawfully on the premises, and ordered him to come up for sentence when called upon, also to p.; v solicitor's fees, £2 2s, and 7s 'costs. On the charge of assault Woods was convicted, and fined £10, half the fine to go to informant to meet • medical expenses incurred. A meeting of the W.C.T.U. was held in the Wesley Church yesterday afternoon, Mrs. Spott-iswoode presiding. Short addresses were given by Mrs. Gray on " Nolicense in Ashburton, as I Saw It," and Mrs. M rigley on W.C.T.U. work and an interesting paper on "What L Learned in .Aehburton,' by M. E. Gordon' and Bollard on being again returned, and proposed that Mr. Gordon should be elected chairman. Mr. Seilert seconded, and endorsed what Mr. . Paterson said, and the motion was carried unanimously. Mr. Gordon then took the chair, and thanked the Board for their continued confidence. OUR OWN* CORRESPONDENTS.] CAMBRIDGE. • The Pukckura Road Board met at Puke--1111 ? n . Wednesday, Mr. R. Fisher presiding. The chairman mentioned that he thought a mistake had been made in regard to the boundaries of the new township of Leamington, as according to the valuation roll about 20 persons living outside the township were shown as ratepayers. When this was pointed, out to the Department the latter contended they were right. The chairman had employed Mr. Jas. Rally to act for the Board in the matter. Dr. Findlay had replied to further inquiries that the boundaries as gazetted were correct. The annual meeting of the Board was then held. The statement showed a, bank credit balance of £224 8» 6d and a substantial excess of assets over liabilities. The chairman read the full statement of receipts and expenditure in connection with the construction of the new high level bridge, showing the Board's proportion (30 per cent.) of the cost as £3390 18s lOd. Smellie made an efficient chairman, and during the evening Mr. Allen, on behalf of the residents,' presented Mr. Stephenson .with a purse of sovereigns as a token of their regard and esteem.
