WAIT AT A COUNTY COUNCIL

A MEETING of the Waitcmata. County Council was held yesterday, there being present: Messrs. V. Kerr-Taylor (chairman), H. 11. Adams, T. Horton, J. McLeod, A. Cochran, J. Hatfield, P. Dye, and J. 11. O'Neill. Salt burn Road. Takapuna: The engineer mentioned that much dissatisfaction was being expressed by the residents of Saltburn lload, Takapuna, at the damage done to the beach by the storm causeway at the end of the road. The stone work should be removed and the beach would then be levelled off again by the action of the waves. The Council decided to curry out the recommendation. Kaukapakapa Biding: It was reported that Messrs. Shanks and Adlington had finished their work in the Kaukapakapa Biding, thus completing the expenditure of the £170 of the Helensville-Port Albert grant that was available. Northern County Councils' .Conference: The chairman reported that Mr. McLeod and himself had attended the conference of the northern county councils. The conference had appointed Mr. C. A. Ca.wkwell secretary for 12 months. The chairman and Mr. McLeod were thanked for attending the conference. It was decided to bring the matter of Southern counties joining the conference before the executive. Whangaparaoa Wharf: The Council decided to pay Mr. George Arkel the sun) of £25 as compensation for land taken at the approach •of the Whangararaoa Wharf. Orewa Bridge: A communication was received from the Prime Minister to the effect that the Government could not see its way to permit the authority to expend the grant of £150 for repairs' to the Orewa bridge. It was mentioned that this grant had been voted by Parliament on the Estimates for four succeeding years, and that the bridge was in a very dangerous condition. The Council declared that they were powerless to save the bridge from decay, as their riding funds were appropriated towards repairs to other roads and bridges for the next, two years. The clerk was instructed to again write to the Prime Minister on the subject. Tenders: Five tenders were received for the erection of an iron bridge at Henderson, and all were declined by the Council owing to the prices being too high. The engineer was instructed to report on a modification of the. contract Mr. .T. Hand was the successful tenderer for the formation of the Ohirangi-Helensville Road, at a cost of £59 16s.
