Chiustchurch, Thursday. At a meeting of the Canterbury Philosophical Institute last" night the chairman said that last year saw the carrying out by the institute of the expedition to the Southern Islands, and during the present year the society would have a great deal of work to carry through. There would be the issuing of the report of that expedition, a- work to be edited by Dr. Che] - ton, and the institute was, in addition, undertaking the consideration of various scientific problems of great interest which arose in connection with the boring of the Arthurs Pass, a tunnel. Another work that had been very seriously taken in hand was the formation of a library as complete as possible of all the scientific literature relating to Antarctica.

It was resolved tc forward to Professor Dendy the congratulations of the institute on his election as a* Fellow of the Royal Society. .
