NORTHCOTE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The , second meeting of the Northcote Borough Council was held last night. The Mayor (Mr. Alex. Bruce) presided, and there were also present: Messrs. J. Broady, H. H. Hunt, Geo. Fraser, A. E. Greenslade, J. Dykes, P. W. Bolland, D. A. Gray, J. B. Tonar, and W. N. Rushbrook. Rating: It was decided to strike rates totalling 2s 6d in the £ on the annual value, viz., Is 3d for general rate, 3d for hospital and charitable aid, and Is for special waterworks loan. The. revenue from all sources was estimated to produce about £1800, but of this amount only about £750 would be produced by the general rate, out of which liabilities totalling £400 had to be met, leaving only about £350 available for road works and general administration for the ensuing year. The ratable value of the borough amounted to £9500. Floating Stage: Correspondence was read from the Auckland Harbour Board with reference to the Council's representations to have a floating stage for vehicular traffic placed at the Northcote Wharf. The secretary of the Board pointed out that the Devonport Ferry Company had. been communicated with. The matter was referred to the Works Committee, with power to act, upon the reply of the Ferry Company being communicated. Statutory Holiday : It was resolved to fix Wednesday as the day for the'statutory halfholiday for shops. Northcote-Birkenhead Footbridge: The Mayor and Messrs. Greenslade, Hunt, and Fraser were appointed a committee to confer with a committee of the Birkenhead Borough Council, with a view to effecting permanent repairs to the footbridge at the head of Shoal Bay, connecting Northcote and Birkenhead. Ferry Matters: Messrs. Fraser, Bolland, Gray, and Broady were appointed a deputation to wait upon the manager of the Ferry Company to-day, and urge upon him the necessity of taking immediate steps to prevent - the inconvenience occasioned by the frequent omission of the ferry steamers to call at Northcote. Footpaths: It was decided to immediately tar and sand all portions of footpaths necessary, so as to ensure a continuous tarred path from the wharf to the school, the Mayor' and Messrs. Cray and Tonar being appointed a committee to supervise the work. Inspection : It was decided that the whole Council visit the . southern portion of the borough, for the purpose of ascertaining works requiring attention, on May 2.
