MR. CHURCHILL'S SEAT.
TRIANGULAR CONTEST. (Received April '14. 11.5 p.m.) London, April 14. Mr. A. G. Hales, the war correspondent and novelist, proposes to contest North-West Manchester as a La-* bourite and tariff and army reformer, although Mr. W. Joynson Hicks (Conservative) opposes Mr. Churchill on behalf of the Unionists. At, the general election in 1906 Mr. J-.yn-son Hicks opposed Mr. Winston Churchill in North-west Manchester, and secured 4398 votes, as against 5639 given Mr. Churchill. The coming contest, for a variety of reasons, promises to be an unusually interesting one, and it was recently stated that the Conservative bodies in Manchester intended to leave no stone unturned to secure the Minister's defeat, though it is understood that a Welsh member of the House of Commons is ready to resign his seat in Mr, Churchill's favour. Mr. A. G. Hales, who proposes to stand in the interests of Labour and tariff and army reform, is an Australian by birth, and prior to the South African war was a, journalist in Australia, being familiarly known as " Smiler" Hales. On the outbreak of war he secured fche position of special correspondent for the London Doily News, while Mr. Churchill was acting as war correspondent, for the Morning Post. Both were taken prisoners, and Hales, in addition, was wounded. He also acted as special correspondent for the Daily News in Macedonia, and during the Russo-Japanese war. He is a, fine speaker, and has lectured through England, America, and South Africa. Latterly he has turned his hand to writing novels, and A Lindsay o' the Dale,' which recently appeared in this paper, was from his pen. Mr. Hales is not likely to win the North-west Manchester seat but the presence of a third party in the held, should he decide to go to the poll, must, of course, make the issue very doubtful.
EX-PRIME MINISTER. . London, April 13. Sir Henry Campb-ell-Bannerman spent a quiet: day yesterday, and obtained considerable sleep last night. I
