INTER PROVING GOSSIP.

fjJY TO.EiyRAPH.—OWN CORREM*o>iD'ks'rS.3 I CANTERBURY. ■ Tuesday, There seems to I*3 & consensus of opinion that the autumn meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club will be cms of the quietest on • iscord. This view of the position " is, of course, due to the poorness of the fields fo? sit*- principal event* on the programme. Th*j small acceptances for the Great Easter and Great Autumn Handicaps came a* a great surprise, not only to local followers, of tire i game, but also to many North Island owner.-. Is the latter had to make their plans over again I have little doubt we would have more of them at Ricearton, where rare* look like being much easier to win than at Ellerslie. I doubt if we will have, more than ten starters for the, Great Kasler Handicap, but with .several good handicap performers incite* " .n the number there should he an inter* g contest. So far a-; the Great Autumn Handicap is concerned, I am not «io hopeful. The majority of those left in the mile and a-h»lf race can only be described m moderates, and [ cannot see tho material for much excitement. Gleneulloch is in great heart, at present. He ha*, been responsible for some first-class work on the track*, chiefly over a mile and a-quftrter, which makes it look »s if the Great Autumn Handicap was his special mission, Goldbeater lias Wen restKUiwible for some good track work lately, ami hi* chance i>f winning a good race at an early date i- very bright. Thin morning he created a very j favourable impression by beating Flcotfoot ; over seven furlongs. Buccleuch is shaping a ell on the tract;*, ] but I am afraid he will not be quite forward enough to do himself justice at our autumn meeting. Cross Battery has been a great disappointment of late. A few weeks ago she was reported to be. doing good track work, hut' her most recent term is far from attractive. Tho three-year-old filly Prim is standing up to her work well, am! she may win a good race before the season closes. Unfortunately she, has never been sound, or I think .she would have been in the first flight. Gwendoinu is galloping well on the tracks, and she has many admirers for the Great Autumn Handicap, but I have not seen anything yet to suggest that she is good enough i for a race like this, though with the oppoj sition distinctly weak she may be equal to j taking a hand in the finish. A movement is on foot to start a pony club iu Christehureh. I expect thai pony meetings would attract considerable attention from regular followers of the game, but there is no need for more race meetings, and I would be sorry to see potty gatherings established in our midst. D. Price has left for Melbourne with Idealist, Ataahua. Maui, .St. Sen field. a.nd the yearlings by St. Ambrose—Arline, Stepniak— Reel, Stepniak—Gipsy Countess, and Stepniak—Fairymaid, Price was accompanied by Mr. ,T. P. Payne, the owner of most, if not all, of the horses mentioned. The champion two-year-old Fleetfoot, has developed lameness, and her condition is causing her trainer some anxiety. Air. Cults is not without hope that she will be a starter next week, but present indications point to the fact that she is a very doubtful proposition. This la to be regretted, not only for iter owner's sake, but also because her absence will rob the Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting of one of the bright stars.

WANGAXUI. Tuesday. J*. Keith, the well-known trainer, who has for the past six yearn been residing in Johannesberg (youth Africa), returned to Wanganui during the week. Keith had the bad luck to lose his vvifi* during his absence* from the Dominion, and he himself was also laid aside for soino time with rheumatism and insomnia. ' Ho informs me that he will again start training operations here, as he considers the local tracks the best in the Dominion. Keith journeyed to Hawera tho other day with a view to securing several horses. Mr. (1. F. Moore intends submitting a batch of thoroughbreds to public auction on tho morning of the first day's races here. This will be a good opportunity for those desirous of securing some useful and wellbred horses. The gentleman who races under the ucm-de-course of Mr. H. Jeffreys" informs me that he intends hunting Sedgemoor during the approaching season, and when the Sedgebrook gelding becomes .seasoned ho will be put over hurdles. The Feild Battery—St. Winifred colt, which is being hacked alwut town by W. Price, is developing into a fine-looking horse, and should be able to gallop. Mr. D. Scally, who for a number of years lias been connected with racing in the North Maud, and more particularly in and around this district, and was well-known as the owner of those good performers Unfits, Corsair, Lady Lcger, Downcast. Somnolent, Matchless", and others, has again a fairly good number to work on. They comprise: — A four-year-old bay mare by Musketry—Somnolent ; a three-year-old brown colt by ChainlinkVigorous; a three-year-old chestnut gelding, by Euroclydon—Princess May; a two-year-old chestnut colt, by Euroclydon Vigorous; a yearling full-brother to the last-named, and a yearling filly by Euroclydon—Somnolent. This string will be given an opportunity of distinguishing itself in due time. The Waverley-trained Showman has been running consistently of late, and his dual win at the Manawatu meeting was well received here. A well-known local punter won a substantial sum over Aborigine's win in the Manawatu Stakes. The locally-trained Sedgemoor and Anemone will both bo taken to the Wairarapa meetine. which commences on Saturday next. Their owner is confident, that the pair will give a good account of themselves. Forest, by New Forest—Patience has been sold by Mr. Scally to a Ha'wke's Bay sport for £60. , , t . . Mr. J. H. Nixon has a couple of luce looking fillies, rising three and four years spectively, by Sedgebrook from Ascot Vale. They will be raced in due time. RANDWICK TRAINING NOTES. ELEVATION LAME. By Tel?graph.—Press Association.—Copy right. Sydney, April 14. Much regret was expressed in spoiling circles when the news was circulated that Elevation was lame, as a great battle between tho New Zealand colt arid Mountain King was being looked orward to. Elevation had galloped a strong mile, in company with The Castaway. The latter had a couple of lengths advantage at the start, but Elevation was a neck in front at the finish in lm. 455, At the conclusion of the gallop Elevation was found to be lame. RICCARTON TRAINING NOTES. [BY TELEGRAPH.— CORHESI'ONDKNT.] Chkistchtjbcu, Tuesday. Despite her lameness, Eleetfoot was given a gallop at Riccarton this morning with Husbandman. Eleetfoot was not extended at~anv part of the journey, and finished a long way behind tho colt. She pulled, up fairly well, and there is still a chance of her starting in the Champagne Stakes and Challenge Stakes, for the trouble does not appear to get worse Boniform, the Yaldhurst crack, Inis developed a splint, and his starting at the C.J.C. meeting is problematical.
