SPORTING NOTES.

[Br PHAETOX-] j Mjejstisgs held under the au*piees of the: Auckland Racing Club have secured so wide.; a popularity that were the prospects of ah { EHerslie gathering not of a highly-favourable : character such would occasion surprise. The outlook in connection with the approaching autumn gathering tears* a particularly roseate hue, and ait all-round record is a prediction widely offered. The 19 horses paid tip for in the Easter Handicap on Friday last still hold their place, and that circumstance -causes the mile race to be invested with much interest. It was thought possible that Mr. BuUvi',', might elect to include Elevation in the list of candidates for the Autumn Stakes rather than start him for the Doncaster Handicap, in which the colt has 9si lib, and which comes up for decision on the opening day of the Australian .Jockey Club's meeting on Saturday. Mr. Bidwiil, however, decided on the handicap event, and the son of San Francisco does not figure as an entrant for the weight-tor-age event. From a Sydney cablegram appearing in another column, it will be seen that Elevation is under * cloud, and it would seem as though grave doubts arc entertained as t" the New Zealand coir fulfilling his Randwiek engagements. It will be -a subject for general regret should Mr. Bidwill have to withdraw Elevation, for the Wellington sportsman was extremely wishful to give his colt the opportunity of meeting the best Australia could produce. Intelligence from Christchuroh stales that Sir George Clifford may not be able to call ■ upon Fleetfoot to carry the gold and blue cheques at the C.J.C. Autumn -Meeting. The daughter of Clanranald is stated to have shown symptoms of unsoundness, and she may have to be treated to a rest. The absence of Fleetfoot from Riccarton next week, should such be recorded, will be a matter for regret, bujt the C.J.C. Champagne Stakes and Challenge Slakes will wear a much more open appearance with her out of the way. At a meeting of the Auckland Racing Club an inquiry was held into circumstance.-, connected with the Nursery Handicap, run at the summer meeting, and as a result the partowner of a horse was disqualified for three months from date for using abusive language to a jockey in the jockey's room after the race. The Maliaki geldings Maui and Ataalma, purchased recently from .Mr. .J. H. Prosser by Mr. 1). Price, were last week shipped to Australia, and they have probably ere this readied their new home in Victoria. Keen judges estimate Maui and Ataalma to bo a brace of the most promising hurdlers that have left Maoriland. General entries in connection with the Ayondale Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting will be received to-morrow up to nine p.m., and the same can be lodged between the hours of six and nine p.m. on Saturday, when the lists will close. Cambrian, who had given strong evidence of being in a position to reproduce his best form in the'autumn, and whose chance in the Easter Handicap was warmly extolled, has unfortunately gone amiss, and he is looked upon as an improbable starter at the A.R.C. meeting. The Soult gelding Grenadier was responI Bible for a slashing performance when he scored in the Hill Handicap at Flemington on the 4th inst. Ho carried 9st 131b, and beat a field of 10 in a canter, running the six furlongs in lm. 15,Js. J. 11. Prosser, the Porirua trainer, arrived from Wellington yesterday by the Rarawa, bringing with him the racehorses Marguerite, Taitoko. Diabolo, Gold Crest, and the Stepniak—Belle Clair filly. By the same steamer H. Eva brought up the Uhlan horse Uhlando. The two-year-old filly by Stepniak—Hello Clair, engaged in the Victoria Handicap, to bo run at Filers!ie on Saturday, has been named Suffragette. Poseidon won the Rawson Stakes at Rosehill on the 4th inst. The son of Positano claims an engagement on Saturday in the Autumn Stakes. The Auckland Racing Club have granted licenses to 16 bookmakers to bet at the approacmng autumn meeting. Maui and Ataalma have been srru k out of the Brighton Hurdle Race. ELLERS..IK TRAINING NOTES.
