MINING NEWS.

OLD HAURAKI. A good deal of attention is being attracted to the Old Hauraki mine just now, owing to the picked stone and specimen dirt coming to hand. Seeing that in the early days this property yielded some tons of rich specimen ore speculators are watching developments with interest. The. latest report from the manager states that tho mine generally is looking brighter. No. 2 cross reef in the slopes between the slide and No. 7 reef averages 4in, and gives good general ore and a little picked stone at each breaking down. At the 300 ft level a reef going right across the face has just been met with, which is dipping east, and looks well. Only a small portion has so far been broken down. The-average width where broken into is 12in. Gold has been seen in the stone broken down from Legge's reef north, at the 220 ft, level. u ;

NEW WAITEKAURI. The directors of the New Waitekauri Gold Mining Company have received a report from the battery manager (Mr. B. Gwilliam), regarding the treatment of copper ore in the Baker's pass lode. He states that he assayed a sample, which gave a payable result, but it" was only a small dab, and as it never continues with the lode he does not think the quantity of ore would warrant an outlay of probably £200 to place a vanner in for its treatment. In this opinion the mine manager concurs. The- latter states that the sample of ore assayed came, from a bunch of stone heavily charged with copper from No. 8 slope, going south off Bakers The manager adds that the stope referred to continues to look well, the ore showing gold when broken down. No. 7 stupe also looks very well. , r CROWN MINES. LATEST DEVELOPMENT WORKS. [BY TELKGRAI'H.—-OWN CORRESPON DEN'T ] Waihi, Tuesday. -U No. 5 level in the New Zealand Crown Company's mine at Karangahake there has been a gradual decrease in the water, which interfered with development operations south of the main incline shaft, and the drive in this section of the property has now been advanced a total distance of upwards of 2200 ft The average width of the lode tor soma distance had been about 18m, and the ore body carried no values, but an improvement has been in evidence again during the past few davs, the reef having opened out to 2ft 6in, while oro samples taken gave an assay value of £1 Is 7d per ton The crosscut east to intersect the new reef (frequently called Lloyd's lode) at this level has been advanced about 60ft since last report, and there remains approximately close on 9Utt to urive before this ore body comes to hand. The No 4 level drive is new in about 2400 ft from the shaft, and the average width of the reef from the south side of the "break has been about 18in. with average values for 12ft of 6s lOd per ton. The reef then cut out, and for some little distance the drive penetrated a formation of no value, which has again given place to a defined ore body heavily charged with manganese. So far', this has not been sampled. A small exploring crosscut from the stopes at the back of JNo. 4 level penetrated a few quart/, veins, too small to be of any value, but a winze then sunk from the floor of No. 3 level on a vein about 9in in width opened out quartz 2ft 6m wide, at a depth of 2ft. The actingsuperintendent (Mr. Daw, pm.) is of opinion that this is a branch of the mam reef, and reports the ore met with here as of high grade. . . ~, . ~ , , . At No. 3 level the drive is still in disturbed country, with nothing of value in the present face, but the stopes over the back of this level continue the main source of ore supply. and are holding out well. The reef during the past few weeks has given an average width of 6ft 3in, and the average value, has been £2 5s per ton. The crosscut next to No. 1 rise is being pushed forward, and a connection with the rise, will! shortly be effected. Recently a formation was intersected in the crosscut underlying heavily to the westward, the quartz being of a manganese character, and of no value. The Waitawheta level has also been in disturbed country, and the average width here of lace has been lOin, carrying ore worth an average of 6s lOd per ton. The country is still very disturbed. At No. 2 level the drive is in a total distance of between 820 ft and 830 ft from No. 1 rise, and the reef maintains an average width of sft Sin, worth £1 16s per ton. The No. 1 level drive was extended about 26ft during the past month, the reef averaging 15in in width, and the value being 10s per ton. The orebody then broke up into small veins of from lin to 3in wide. MOUNTAIN KING. [BY TIXKGB.U'H. —OWN" CORRESFON'HKXT.] COBOMANDEL, Tuesday. Work in the Mountain King mine at Kuaotunu is being pushed ahead under the management of Mr. James Hayes. A drive is being driven from the winze, and it is expected that the reef will be intersected this week. It is intended to push the low level ahead. GOLDEN BAH. [BY TKI.WiKAPU.— OWN roKKKM'UNUI NT. Corom aniikl, Tuesday. Mr. A. J. I'rescott has been appointed manager of the Golden Pali mine, adjoining the Old Hauraki claim. He will confer with the directors this week, and as soon as a scheme of operations is decided upon, work will be commenced.
