A SERIOUS CHARGE.
[by telegraph.—own correspondent.] Whangarei, Monday. William Brighting appeared at the Police Court to-day, before the Mayor and Mr. Futchings, on a charge of criminally assaulting a girl, six years of age, on April 9. Evidence was given by the mother of the child, and also by the child herself. After hearing the testimony of police, the Bench decided that the evidence was not conclusive enough to warrant them in committing the accused for trial, and they accordingly dismissed the case.
