BIRKENHEAD METHODIST CIRCUIT. At the quarterly meeting of the Birkenhead Methodist Circuit the Rev. G. S. Cook presided, and there was a large attendance of representatives. ■ The members roll showed a small increase, and finances were satisfactory, there being a credit balance on the quarter. There was also an increase of scholars in the Sunday-schools, and the L esley Guild was feporled as working efficiently. The report of the church services and Sun-day-school instituted at Birkclale during the quarter was regarded as very satisfactory. A vehicle and harness have also been procured in this quarter for the use of the minister. EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE. V The . monthly meeting of the Managing Committee was held in the Normal School, Wellesley-street, on Saturday, the president, Mr H. It. Cousins in the chair. Luke Memorial: A circular from the Luke Memorial Committee, soliciting subscriptions for a memorial proposed to bo erected at Otahuhu, was referred to the quarterly meetin&» Ul School Attendance Act; The secretary reported that Messrs. Calder and Goldwaier, solicitors, had furnished him, free of , cost, with a full report of the appeal case, Small v. Notion, in which the Supreme Court had directed that justices must convict and inflict ft- penalty in cases where it was proved that parents were guilty of not complying with the provisions of the Act. A vote of thanks was passed to Messrs. Oalder and Goldwater for the report, which will be published in the Journal of Education for the information of all interested in the carrying out of the Act. ' _ . School Books: The secretary of the Headmasters' Association forwarded a series of resolutions adopted by his association, and bearing on the question of free school) books. Consideration of the resolutions was deferred till the quarterly meeting. It was decided to send an' autograph letter to Mr. Purdie, expressing appreciation of his past services in the cause of education, and wishing him all success in the future.
