EDEN. " D. Hay, Grafton's skipper, won the toss, ''y and elected to bat, going to the wickets in company with S. P. Jones, to face the bowlt ing of Hobson and Stemson at Eden Park " on Saturday. The innings was opcnetQfeautiously, the runs in the first half-hour Being t>. very carefully compiled. Hay was the first to go, being nieoly caught by Gray off Hobsen. -Tones soon followed, getting his leg in front of one of Stemson's. A. Sloman filled the gap. and put his first ball into the hands \ of J. Mills. Mason came in, and played a nice innings, his score of 28 being a most 4, useful contribution. He was eventually ' caught by Elliot, off Smith. The colts, R. Sloman and Horspool, kept tho wickets tip ■ for some time, but did not ado many to the i'. score. Sloman was dismissed by a brilliant * catch by Elliot, who had to leap sideways : tin the air to reach the ball. The remaining batsmen neither stayed long, nor added ' many to the total, the innings closing for 83 'J runs. Geo. Mills (three for 11) and BrookeSmith (four for 18) did good work with the ball. „ Eden went to the .wickets at 4.30 in a failfevi ing light, and opened badly, Cuinmings being run out. by a smart return from the field knocking the wickets down. _ Elliot aid not stay long, Iritis; caught behind the wickets. Ho played late at a leg ball from Mason, and ' hit it against the chest of the wicket- ' . keeper, .Tones, who ('aught it on the bounce ? off his chest. Taylor, who was playing good cricket, then became associated with BrookeSmith, and the pair made a decent stand. Brooke-Smith touched one on the off, when he was five, for which" both the wicketkeeper and slip reached, but he survived. Smith showed some fine wrist work in pulling D. Hay, who was bowling the off theory, to the on. He succumbed in attempting one of these strokes, Lepine nicely taking the chance off Hay. Taylor (23) was still linconquered at call of time, the result then being 51 for the loss of three wickets. The scores follow: — GRAFTON.-— Innings. D. Hay. o Grey, b Hobson 18 S. P. Robinson then had a succession of partners in Olliff, Fairburn, and Murray.. the latter vigorously compiling 16. Robinson lost his wicket by putting one up oft" McCoy, Kemp securing the ball. His contribution of 62 was a very valuable addiI* tion to the score, and is exceedingly meriT- torious in view of the smallness of the scores . all round. Parnell's innings closed for 149, and stumps were then drawn.
