HIS FIRST APPEARANCE.

j At the Police Court on Saturday morning, j before Mr. R. W. Dyer, S.M., a young man named Wm. Bloxham, was charged with dealing on March 19. one cigar-holder and case, one spokeshave, one chisel, one pair of snips, and two cakes of glue, valued at £1 6s, the property of Albert Hough. Mr. Singer appeared for accused, and pleaded not guilty. Sergeant Hendry prosecuted. The evidence showed that accused was employed by Hough in painting a house, and when he went away the things were missed. They were found in accused's possession. Accused stated that he had found the things in a water barrel, and when asked about a certain chisel he said he bought it in Symonds-street. When in the box accused denied saying he had bought the chisel, but Mr. Hough corroborated the constable's evidence. His Worship said he did not believe that accused found the things 111 the barrel. As this was his first appearance be would not send him to gaol, but would fine him £5, and costs £1, or in default one month's imprisonment. APPLICATION FOR SEPARATION. Anne Lyons applied for a separation order from her husband, Francis Joseph Lyons, 011 the grounds of • ruelty. Mr. Singer appeared for complainant, and Mr. Prendergast for defendant. The evidence showed that the parties had not been living together for some three years. Mrs. Lyons said her husband had not supported her" since they had lived apart. He had ordered her out of the house, and had hit, her and threw the cat in her face. The husband denied the charges, and stated that his wife had left the house hecause she was dissatisfied, but judging by ! the letters she had sent to him after she left she "hoped it would not be for long."
