AN AGRICULTURAL CHAIR.
A FARMERS" PROPOSAL. I Th>: Farmers' Advocate suggests the creation of a chair of veterinary science, in connection with Victoria College, and Sir Robert Stout has expressed the hope that this university college will l>e endowed with a fund sufficient for the appointment of a professor of veterinary science and agriculture. The Fanners' Advocate points out that the cost would mean about £12,000 to £15,000, and asks "are there no wealthy men connected w. : ,h the land, who, having had splendid arsons lately, are prepared to endow such a chair, which would be a, service to the community for all time?" And it goes on to say that probably if ±)6000 or £7000 were subscribed, the Government would see its way to subsidise it by way of £ for £. The Advocate further suggest* that there is no need to go outside the country for one to fill the chair, for "' in our chief veterinarian we have a gentleman whose gifts, attainments, experience and previous work entitle him to the position." Mr. Oil ruth is a man who is not only a pathologist and bacteriologist of .world-wide standing, but possesses more than a passing knowledge of agricultural sciences, and is a lecturer of great ability. In addition to this he has a round giasp of the needs of agriculture of this country, an advantage of considerable importance in planning the course of study and bringing the work to a successful practical issue.
