BOARD OF EDUCATION.

A mekting of tho Auckland ' Board of Education was held yesterday, when there were present: Messrs. L. .1. Bagnail (chairman), H. J. Ctroenslade, M.P., A. R. Harris, (i. J. Garland, 0. 'J'. Barriball, J. Stallworthy, M.P., G. Edgecumbe, and •I. D. McKenzie. Resignations: The following resignations were accepted:—Messrs. F. I. Becroft, Albcrtland North School; M. J- Elliott, Ngararatunua School; M. King, Katikati, No. 3 School; 0. T. Casey, pupil teacher, Napierstreet School; and Winifred Hunt, pupil teacher, Ponsonby School. Appointments:- The Teachers Selection Committee- recommended that the following appointments should be authorised by the Board:—Mr. James B. Ramsay, headmaster, Olevedon; Mr. Claud Hot son, teacher, Trypheim and Blind Bay Schools; Mr. William P. Storey, teacher, Broadwood "aided" School; Miss Clara J. Wharfe, teacher, Bickerstafl'o No. 2 School; Miss Christina Murray, teacher, Otan "aided" School; Mrs. P. A. Windust, teacher, Kariaotahi; Mr. M. Macrae, teacher, Rchia; Mr. A. E. 'Irigg, teacher, Kaurihohore; Miss* L. F. Clarke, teacher, Whangapoura; Miss J. if. Bayly, fifth assistant, Newton West; Miss M. A. 1,. Short, eighth assistant, Beresfordstreet; Miss A. E. ilawkes, assistant, Ramalama; Mrs. Sara Barker, assistant, Tairua; Miss Irene M, McCarthy, assistant, Waihopo ; Miss Ellen L. Walker, pupil teacher, from Epsom to Otahuhu School; Miss Minnie G. Harrison, pupil teacher, Epsom; Miss Kate E. Vickery, pupil teacher, Newton West, Miss Mattie Ponton, pupil teacher, Napier-street; iuxl Miss Daisy C. Stewart, pupil teacher, Ponsonby. It was also recommended by tho committee that school committees be consulted in regard to proposed appointments as follows:-—Brynder-wyn, Miss Mabel H. Slade; Ngunguru, Mr. Edgar R. Long Albertlaud North, Miss Lillie walker, and Katikati No. 3, Mr. Conrad S. Fortune, and that applications bo invited by advertisement for appointments:— Headmaster, Ramarama School, and sole charge, Ngararattmua, Tangaihi, Titoki, and Waitangi. The committee deferred recommendation in regard to tho selection of a teacher for tho Whangarei Heads School. ' The report was adopted. Finance: The Finance Committee recommended payment of accounts totalling ±,iU,508 on tho administration account, £731 19s on the building account, and £113 on tho manual and technical account. The chairman had been authorised to negotiate tho acquisition of the lease of lots 29-31, Wellesley-street, part of the site for the Technical College. The committee recommended that new regulations for the employment of pupil teachers be framed in accordance with the recommendations of tho chief inspector, and submitted to the Minister. The report was adopted. Birkenhead and Chelsea District: The matter of a school in Birkenhead district was again before the Board. Mr. J. 0. Speedy presented a petition signed by 81 residents of Chelsea and Birkenhead, asking that the greater portion of Birkdale School should bo moved nearer Birkenhead, the remaining smaller portion being left as a side school at Birkdale. The matter was deferred, tho chief inspector and the ward members to report. ~,.., Grafton School: It was reported that the grant of £480 for extension of Grafton School was not sufficent, and that the Board anplied for £540. It was agreed to request the Minister to increase the grant. . Nelson Memorial Essays: The circulars relating to tho conditions of the Nelson memorial essay competitions were received, and it was decided to distribute them to teachers. •• , Firo Prevention: The Chairman reported that the settlers in the Katui district had been thanked for the action taken to protect Marlborough School from destruction through bush fires. Annual Meetings: The date for the annual meetings of householders was formally fixed for April 27. \
