ATHLETIC NOTES.

FOOTBALL.

AUCKLAND RUGBY UNION. A MEETING of the Management Committee of the Auckland Rugby Union was held last evening. Arrangements were made for holding the annual meeting on April 10. It was&ecided in regard to the British team's visitMo New Zealand, to urge on the New Zealand Rugby Union the advisability of foregoing the inter-Island match, and substituting test matches if practicable. AUCKLAND REFEREES' ASSOCIATION. A special meeting of the Auckland Rugby Referees' Association was held last evening, the principal business being the arrangements for the holding of the New Zealand rcierees' conference in Auckland on the 17th and 18th of April. The annual meeting of the Auckland association will held next Wednesday.

HAWKE'S BAY BEAT WAIRARAPA. [BY TELEGRAPH ntES3 ASSOCIATION.] NAPIER, Wednesday. The representative cricket match, Wairarapa v. Hawke's Bay, was resumed to-day. Hawke'a Lay, in their second innings, gave the visitors some leather-hunting, and eventually declared their innings closed with the score at 207 for two wickets. Fentoa scored 101 not out, Bailey 71. and Hawke 15 not out. Wairarapa, in their second attempt, only succeedod in putting together 46 runs, leaving Hawke'a Bay winners by 340 runs. At the Dannevirke Athletic and Cycling Club's Sports Meeting to-day, in the firemen's two-men coupling event. B. Nuttall and H. Drinkwater put up a New Zealand record of 335. The previous best record for this event is said to be by the New Plymouth team at the Exhibition, viz., 35 4-ss. BLENHEIM HIBERNIAN SPORTS. [BY TELEGRAPH.— ASSOCIATION.] BLENHEIM, Wednesday. At the Hibernian Sports to-day. Nicholls, of Blenheim, won the principal event, Pickerton being second. Ward, of New Plymouth, won the three other events on the programme. Heffer and Jaeobsen, of Nelson, were the principal winners in the cycling events. WANGANUI CALEDONIAN SOCIETY. [BT TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] ■Wasgastji, Wednesday. At the annual meeting of the Wanganui Caledonian Society to-night a motion was passed in favour of seceding from the New Zealand Athletic Union, the opinion being strongly expressed that the society should be in a position to ran its meetings independent of outside control. SPORTS AT INVKRCARGILL. [BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Invercargill, Wednesday. The Irish athletic annual sports, which includes the Sheffield Handicap, one of the largest running events in the colony, was held to-day iu pouring rain, entries coming from as far north as Auckland. Section A: Wellington, 19, beat Palmerston North, 12; St. John's, 22, beat Palmerston North, 19; Greenmeadows, 22, beat Dannevirke, 16; Marton, 19, beat Napier, 15.
