WOMEN'S CHRISTIAN TEMPERANCE UNION.

The sittings of the Women's Christian Temperance Union were concluded yesterday. Mrs. Swan was appointed superintendent »f thrift. Certain amendments to the bylaws were made, and it was resolved that the union place on record its appreciation of the work done by Mrs. Dewar, one of the oldest members of the union. A vote of thanks was also passed, to Miss M. Smith :or auditing the accounts. \ A letter was read from Miss Agnes Slack, »f India. She stated that in India total abitinenco amongst the better class was very rare. She was able to conduct several drawingroom meetings' while there. Much sympathy was received from the educated Indian people, and one ■■ thousand pledges had been taken. The drink bill for India had increased a million during the last two years. A letter was also read from Mrs. F. S. Hallows, national president of the W.C.T.U. in India. Mrs. Whitby, superintendent of the work amongst seamen, in reporting on the work done stated that in Dunedin Mr. Falconer was doing splendidly. - Every vessel that came to the wharves was' visited, literature was freely distributed among the sailors, and distressed seamen were assisted. At Timaru,! Invercargill, and Greymouth good work was also being done. Various other reports of an encouraging nature were read. It was resolved that next year's convention be held at Wellington. It was decided to affiliate with the International Temperance Bureau. A _ very successful and harmonious convention was brought to a close by the singing of "God bo With You Till We Meet igaiu." In the afternoon the members of the convention attended a garden party held in the grounds of the Hon. G. lowlds at Mount Albert. Quite an array of ladies were present, with a fair sprinkling of the sterner ••ex. The Bavarian Band was in attendance. Afternoon tea was provided by Mr. and Mrs. r'owlds for over 200 guests. Mrs. Cole, on schalf of the union, returned thanks to Sirs. Fowlds. The admission money is to go to •he local union to assist in defraying the expenses in connection with the convention.
