At the present time the number of those who desire to enter the police force and are qualified for service is just about equal to the'demand. Inquiries by the Lyttclton Times go to show that it- is not particularly easy to enter the force. Practically the whole of the past life of an applicant has to be revealed when he, seeks admission ; at any rate, he has to give full particulars of his career since he left school, and in addition he has to pass a strict physical test before a doctor. In both respect* a good many arc called, but are not chosen. It is surprising to bear, however, that varicose veins arc a frequent occurrence in applicants, and that no satisfactory reason for their happenings in such numbers has yet been given.
