THE BAKERS' AWARD.
A NOVEL POINT. [BY TELEGRAPH. — PRESS ASSOCIATION I I Wellington", Tuesday. j A NOVEL point concerning the bakers' I award came before the Arbitration Court I yesterday for interpretation, when J. and Mil n * I K. Towersey were charged— (l) With breakj ing the award by paying a less rate of pay > than provided for ; and (2) with failing | to give "dry pay." The respondents, who j it was shown were pastrycooks, and were i not under any award, make a small quau- ! tity of bermaline bread and milk loaves j j daily. It was contended by the union that ■ ! this brought them within scope of the i ! award. j Mr. Kellowa said the point was one which ] | had created great interest amongst bakers j i throughout the Dominion, and his associa- j I tion had 'instructed him to test it. Their i I contention was that the making of berma- ; | line bread and milk loaves did not bring j pastrycooks under the bakers' award. Mr. A. Collins, baker, called by the union, said the point had already been decided at Palmerston North, when it was held that milk bread was made by fermentation, and anything that came from fermentation came under the award. Mr. Kellow explained that bermaline and milk bread were tieated in a different way ! to ordinary bread. After further discussion, His Honor said the question seemed to have caused very little trouble for the last 16 or 17 years. After this period it seemed scarcely worth while to have raised the point, as the | present award was just about to run out. The beat thing would be to allow it to I stand over until the hearing of the industrial I dispute, a.nd the parties would probably be able to come to some agreement in the ! meantime. This course was agreed to. I —— —
