London, March 4. Several hopgrowers have refused to testify before the Royal Commission on the state of the hop industry, on the ground that the Commission is entirely composed of freetraders.
An agitation against the free importation of -foreign hops has been growing up in Kent for some time, and, the Government last week appointed a select committee to inquire into the condition of the industry. A. meeting of Iho Kentish growers, held on February 26, resolved that, tin; time whs ripe for the Government to take action to protect English growers against unfair foreign competition.
