COMMONWEALTH OIL COMPANY. [FUOM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] London. January 3. Is New Plymouth to find a competitor in New South* Wales? The Commonwealth Oil Company, it is announced, is shortly issuing £150,000 5£ per cent, first mortgage debentures. The company states that it owns more than 30 square miles of shale and coal fields situated in Woolgar and Capevfcee, New South Wales, and has erected its own power, electric lighting, and mining plant, .works, dwelling-nouses, _ and offices at Woolgar. The consulting engineer of the company estimates the shale proven at 20,000.000 tons. There are also rich deposits of coal on the estate, the existence of which was unsuspected when the properties were first purchased, but which, it in stated, will be a great factor in the progress of the concern.

CANTERBURY GRAIN MARKET. [OX TELKGKAPH.—OWN CORRKSI'OMTDEKT.] . CiißisTcnuitcn, Wednesday. In .South Canterbury, according to the Press' special reporter, the dry weather is having anything but a desirable influence on the farm, though it has one redeeming feature in that it has enabled the crops to be harvested., in good condition, not a bushel of grain having been spoiled by wet weather up to the present time. The majority of the crops have been out and in a good many parts threshing is proceeding, a large quantity of grain being threshed this vear direct from the stack. The crops, taken on the whole, are very fair. The wheat is not so full-berried as in ordinary seasons, and the oats are thin, though some very good crops of well-filled Cartons have been harvested. These are worth from 2s to 2s Id par bushel at country sidings (sacks extra). Bun oat*, of which tliet" Ib a large quantity on offer, are commanding 2* delivered at Thnaru. For South Can-terbury-grown wheat local millers are effering 4s 3d at country sidings, but farmers who can afford to hold are not disposed to accept this, believing thai; before long the priva will go to bs. Vox if- particularly prime line of milling wheat, grown at Hiikutarainea. which was on fide at Tlir.aru last week, 4a s]d was refused. There are numbers of crops of wheat which will yield fully 60 or 70 bushels to the acre. The average wheat yield over the whole of South Canterbury is set down at a rough estimate as between 25 and 30 bushels per acre, while the average for oats is «et down at between 35 and 40 bushels.
