NEWCASTLE COAL TRADE.
WHARF LABOURERS' STRIKE. EXPORTS FOR THE YEAH. By Telegraph.-Press Association.— Sydnkv, January 16Fears of the wharf labourers' strike at Newcastle affecting the inter-State companies have been dispelled by an arrange* rnent marie between the federated steamship owners and the waterside union*, confining the trouble to its present limit*. In connection with the delay to the steamer Manuka, the Premier is taking steps to prevent the congestion of trade at Newcastle standing in the way of passenger steamers obtaining hunker coal. The coal exports from Newcastle last year amounted to 4,546,000 tons, of a value of £2,017,000; the value being £443,000 and the tonnage 570,595 above the previous year's export*. New Zealand took 338,720 tons, an increase of about 500 tons.

The I'claw Main colliery has been thrown idle, owing to a dispute with the wheelers over the hours of starting and finishing work.
