THE HEAT IN AUCKLAND.
SOME HIGH TEMPERATURES. The heat in Auckland on Tuesday and Wednesday last was very trying. The highest shade reading recorded at the Museum Building on Tuesday was 80.50deg., while on Wednesday it reached 81deg. This reading is a record for the present summer, but, as Mr. Cheesenian, who has been taking records for a number of years past, points out, there is nothing abnormal in euch a temperature for an Auckland summer. The last two or three summers, he says, have not been so hot as usually, and on this account, perhaps, the heat is. being felt more this season than would otherwise be the case. January and February are lire two hottest months of the year, and in past summers the shade readings for a considerable number of days during these months have ranged between 80deg. and "86deg. The highest shade reading on record for Auckland is 92deg., which was registered some 15 years ago. In connection with the present spell of hot weather it may be of interest to compare the present experience with that of 12 months ago. At that time there was a very heavy rainfall, and a considerable area, of the country districts was flooded. A great deal of damage was done to property, and as one result railway communication on the Waikato line was interrupted for several days. Now we are experiencing an abundance of suifirhine, and the country is suffering from bush fires and a . mild drought, which threatens to become rather serious if the fine weather continues much longer. _____
