THIEVES AT WORK.

NEED FOE VIGILANCE.

JEWELLERY AND MONEY STOLEN

AT PARNELL.

Tannic are at present a number of undesirable characters in Auckland. This is demonstrated by the fact that of late several impudent robberies have been committed. Residents in the suburbs, and especially in the neighbourhood of Ponsonby and ParjK*ll, appear to have suffered more than those in the inner city area in this respect, and householders would be well advised to see that their premises are properly teemed.

At Parnell on Wednesday afternoon a robbery was committed at the -residence of Mrs. C. A. Stubbs, of St. Stephen'# Road. It appears that at about 2.30 in the afternoon Mrs. Stubbs left her home in order to visit the city, and in doing so omitted to close one of her front windows, which was left, down slightly at the top: On returning at 4.30 she found the window wide o}«n at the bottom and the front door slightly ajar, and on making an investigation discovered that her daughter's bedroom had been ransacked, and a quantity of jewellery valued nt about £10, and a purse containing £2 10s in money stolen. None of. the other rooms appeared to have been touched, which leads to the conclusion that, the thief or thieves must have been disturbed. The police have the matter in hand. HAMILTON HOTEL ENTERED. [from our own 'correspondent.] Hamilton. Thursday. Last night thieves were actively at work in the Hamilton Hotel. Amongst the guests in tho house were several members of the Pollard Opera Company, including Mr. Low, the manager. This was probably tho reason for the raid en the hotel, but fortunately Mr. Low had taken the precaution to lock the night's takings in a strong room in the town. Sometime during the night his room was entered, and his gold watch and chain, some medals, and a sovereign purse containing five sovereigns were appropriated. Other rooms were also visited but nothing of value was taken. INVERCAKGILL BURGLARY. [r-X telegraph.—PßESS association.] Invercargill, Thursday. The offices of W. T. Murray and Co. were burglariously entered last night. Mr. Hoyles, secretary of the company, locked up at six o'clock, and this morning two windows were found broken, and the place ransacked. No valuables were secured.
