ENGLISH CRICKETERS.

THE THIRD TEST.

VISITORS WELL IN THE LEAD.

FOUR WICKETS FOR 333.

By Telegraph.—Press Association.—Copyright.

(Received January 14, 1 a.m.)

Adelaide, January 13. The third test match between the Englishmen and a team representing Australia was continued to-day, with the temperature at 102deg. in the shade.

Clem. Hill, though improved in health, still refrained from fielding.

O'Connor and Saunders bowled. Hardstaff was streaky, and in O'Connor's third over was clean bowled. Hardstaff had batted for two hours and seven minutes, and, though at times uncertain, he played an extremely useful innings, and hit nine fourers. Six for 277.

Crawford followed, but with five runs added Rhodes was snapped up by the wicket-keeper. He had played a nice innings, lasting 85 minutes. Barnes joined Crawford, who hit two fine fours off O'Connor. Armstrong was tried in : place of Saunders at 306, and Noble took the other end nine runs later. An hour's play yielded 56 runs. Barnes was playing with great caution, and took 35 minutes to make 10. Five runs later he drove the ball hard back to Armstrong, who held it. Eight for 320. Humphries kept up his wicket without scoring till the luncheon adjournment, when Crawford was 40 and the total 332.

O'Connor and Saunders resumed the attack, and Crawford completed 50 in 100 minutes. Runs came steadily from Crawford, while Humphries kept up his wicket. Macartney and Armstrong were then tried, and the latter, in hie. second over, beat Crawford, who had played a splendid, chanceless innings, lasting 110 minutes. He had hit eight fours. Fielder ran for the first stroke, and Macartney, at cover, brilliantly threw down Humphries' wicket. Humphries had batted 65 minutes, and the innings had lasted 374 minutes. Tho fielding to-day was much better than on Saturday. Fielder and Barnes began the English attack against Noble and Trumper. A wide and six to Noble came from Fielder, but Barnes, with the last ball of the firet over, beat Trumper: One for 7. Macartney was the next man. He batted cautiously, but Noble scored steadily, and half-an-hour's play produced 27 runs. When the score stood at 3b, Barnes beat Macartney with a breakback. Macartney had been in for 33 minutes. At 45 Crawford replaced Fielder and 50 went up for 66 minutes' play. At 52 Barnes, who had bowled 10 overs for five maidens, 13 runs, and two wickets, was given a spell, Braund taking his end. Macnlister took 35 minutes in getting into double figures. When he had crept up to 17 in 48 minutes, Crawford got him leg before: Three for 71. Armstrong opened vigorously, and the deficit was wiped off after 105 minutes' play. At 80 a double change—Hatchings and Rhodeswas resorted to.. Two fours by Armstrong completed 100 in two horn's. Barnes then relieved Hutchings. Noble reached 50 after he had been batting for 130 minutes. Fielder took the ball from Rhodes. Noble, when at 54, put up a ball to conrer which Rhodes scarcely reached. Each batsman scored three in the next over. Fielder had only one over, as he had to retire indisposed. Braund took his place, and Barnes' next over yielded nine runs, each batsman hitting a four. Armstrong then made a mighty hit straight over Braund's head, and Hutchings, on the boundary, judged it nicely. Armstrong had kitted well for 55 minutes, but threw away his wicket: Four for 127. O'Connor helped Noble to play out time. Noble's defence was masterly, being at the wickets for two hours and 40 minutes.
