PRIZE DISTRIBUTIONS.

KING EDWARD'S COLLEGE. Tun annual distribution of prizes in connection with King Edward's College, Lower Symonds-street, took place ( at the college last evening,' when there was a large attendance of those interested in the work of tho institution, and past and present pupils. The chair was taken by Mr. F. E. Baumc, K.C. (chairman of the board of governors of the college), and associated with him on the platform were tho Hon. W. Beehau, M.L.C., tho headmaster, Mr. T. Harle Giles, and Mr. P. J. Nerheny. Apologies for 'unavoidable absence were received from the Mayor (Mr. A. M. Myers), and Messrs. La wry and Poole, M.P.'s.

Prior to distributing the prizes, the chairman said that for many years he had advocated a free system of education, enabling every lad to obtain a thoroughly good education, but at the same- time ho had always recognised tho advantages of schools not included in tho State system, such as this. Nothing was more disadvantageous to true education than a certified system. This collego catered specially for thoso wishing to enter into commercial life, and knowing what lie did about mercantile matters, he was sure the instruction was valuable, ami thorough. Mr. Baume proceeded to refer to the value of education to everyone —to the worker and the tradesman, as well as those entering the learned professions. The headmaster had referred to tho scarcity of boys for commercial positions, but lie did not regard this as a matter to be regretted altogether, as probably many of those who received a good education were going in for trades. That was a very good thing. In conclusion, tho chairman congratulated the principal and tho staff on what had been accomplished during the year, and expressed his gratification that so much attention had been paid to athletics. He trusted the school would be quite as successful during the forthcoming year.

The chairman then presented the college prizes as follows: —

Bennett; dux, commercial aide, junior division (silver medal),' Stanley Mcllveen; dux, examination aide (sold medal), F. J. 11. Filiation; certificates of proficiency, C. O'llarii, V. 11. Hildrcth, K. Dykes, P.. Selley). Souvenirs of the sporto were presented to Master K Baume, and to the secretary (R. L. kitten), starter (U. W. Parker), and the handicapper (F. Glover).

In commenting on the work on the commercial side during the last year, Mr. Giles said that the demand for well trained commercial lads had never been greater, and he had been unable to fill the positions at disposal. In spite of the fact that the salaries were very much in advance of -what they were a few years ago, parents did not seem to be desirous of sending their lads into the mercantile world. His curriculum in respect of commercial training was thoroughly practical, and on the " bread-and-butter side." Mr. Giles concluded by expressing his pleasure at seeing so many old boys present. Out of tlie oOOp boys who . had passed through his hands, ho did not believe lie had lost the run of half-a-dozen. (Applause.) Mr. W. J. Gatenby, 8.A., and Mr. F. G. Dunlop, M.A., reported as follows on the work of tho evening classes: —We have much pleasure in reporting that the work of the evening classes throughout the year has been most satisfactory. The attendances have been good, and the standard of the work done by many students has been very much beyond the average, the classes in general evincing an enthusiasm in their studies that has rendered possible unusually rapid progress, and that gives great promise of success for the large largo number of candidates who have entered for the public examinations. Mr. Dunlop gave a short address dealing with the work carried out during the year. lie deprecated strongly the "shoddiness" which was entering into many of tho examinations hold. . A short programme of musical and other items was contributed to by Mrs. Mixner, Miss Emily Moon, Masters C. O'Hara, Fred. Mixner, and T. Hildrcth, and Mr. Horace Stebbing.

Prior to the distribution of prizes the visitors inspected the various works of art, including paintings, drawings, and needlework, all of which reflect credit on tho pupils and their teachers. Miss Matthews (ono of the principals) afterwards delivered a sliort address, in the course of which sho said that the plans for the future of the school were as yet undecided, but in all probability a lady from England would take it over early next year.
