SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

NEWTON. A meeting of the Newton School Committee, held last night, was attended by Messrs. C. H. Sexton (chairman). White, James, Reed, Schofield, Weddingham, Holdsworth, and Smith. The headmaster of the Newton East School reported that tho number on the roll for tho month was 856, with an average attendance of 793. Leave of absence had been granted to several teachers on account of sickness. The headmaster of the Newton West School reported 758 on the roll, with an average attendance cjf 669. This school had also suffered from the absence of teachers through ill-health. Very satisfactory imports oil the examinations conducted by the Board's inspectors were received, and the secretary was instructed to write to the headmasters and staff' congratulating them on the splendid result-, obtained. It was decided to again request the Board to ercit a new fence in front of the Newton Ea-t School. Accounts amounting to £28 16- Id wero passed for payment. A circular was read asking the committee to express an opinion on the suggested Biblereading in schools. At Parnell School Committee ting, held on' Tuesday e-enillg, the inspector's report on the annual examination of the school whs read, and was considered by the committeemen to be highly creditable to the master and teaching staff'. A resolution was passed congratulating Mr. Scott, and staff' on the results of the examination. The attendance was reporter! by the headmaster to be improving.
