THE TARIFF.
[BY TELEGRAPH.— PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Dukedin*, Saturday. Local dealers in ammunition are forwarding a protest to the Commissioner of Customs against'the proposed increased duty on sporting cartridges from Is 6d per hundred to 2s 6d. They say the proposed dutywill amount to 60 per cent, on the cheaper grades, and 40 per cent, on the best grades, which rate is practically prohibitive, and will prevent a large number of cartridges being used in the rabbit-infested country of Ota-go and Southland, where shooting is a necessary auxiliary to poisoning and trapping. The petitioners allege that the Colonial Ammunition Company, of Auckland, will alone benefit by the proposed increase of duty, and object to a monopoly liv one firm. "The Otago Pharmaceutical Association is forwarding to the Minister for Customs a protest against 5 per cent, increase in duty on drugs and chemicals, which they state will affect only 250 chemists.
