TELEGRAPH POLES IN QUEENSTREET.

' The City Council, at a recent meeting, passed a resolution suggesting that -when the footpaths were taken up in Queen-street for' the purpose of laying down wires for supplying electricity, the Government should take advantage of the opportunity to place the telegraph and telephone wires under " ground. The resolution was sent to the Government in due course, and a reply was received thanking the Council for their suggestion, but stating the decision given by the. Acting-Superintendent of Telegraphs in February last, to defer consideration in the meantime, could not be altered.

The Mayor (Mr. A. M. Myers) said, in connection with this matter, that the Department was erecting a wooden telegraph pole at the corner oi Shortland-street, iii tront of the premises of a. business firm. He was sorry that he could not congratulate the Government on the inartistic design of the pole, nor upon the otter poles which they were placing in the main streets. He sincerely trusted that, although the Government might not put the lines under ground, they would take into consideration the desirability of erecting 1 ferro-concrcte pillars, which would be much more sightly than the present wooden ones. On the suggestion of Mr. H. M l . Smeeton, it was decided to inform the Government when the Council was likely to cutup the footpaths, so that they might give further ..consideration to the suggestion of underground lines. .
