A constable surprised three burglars in a hotel cellar at Brunswick, watched them until he secured the services of a passer-by. He then aroused the inmates. In the meantime the burglars cut their way through the bar floor, and when the constable gained admission ho saw them escaping into the street. He fired three unavailing shots after them. The robbers secured no booty. MEAT-CANNING. Melbourne, July 4. Major Long, who is on a special mission from the War Office, has completed his inquiries respecting meat-canning in the States, and says he is perfectly satisfied with the sanitary conditions under which operations are conducted in Australia and New Zealand.
