(Received .July 5. 1.1 a.m.) Adelaide, July 4, Wheat is advancing, and is now quoted at 3s lid. ', y NEW SOUTH WALES LIQUOR BILL. Sydney, July 4. Canon .Boy y in his annual review of the liquor traffic, shows that New South Wales last year spent £4,684,671 in drink, being £118,659 above the previous year. The expenditure per head of population was £3 Is 6d, being an increase of 2d. THE MAIL SYNDICATE. Melbourne, July 4. Mr. Deakin stated in the House of Representatives that the mail contract had been cancelled, because the additional bond was not forthcoming. The original bond of £25,000 is to be forfeited, though it is understood that the Government does not intend to deal harshly with the syndicate. BURGLARS SURPRISED. Melbourne, July 4. A constable surprised three burglars in a hotel cellar at Brunswick, watched them until he secured the services of a passer-by. He then aroused the inmates. In the meantime the burglars cut their way through the bar floor, and when the constable gained admission ho saw them escaping into the street. He fired three unavailing shots after them. The robbers secured no booty. MEAT-CANNING. Melbourne, July 4. Major Long, who is on a special mission from the War Office, has completed his inquiries respecting meat-canning in the States, and says he is perfectly satisfied with the sanitary conditions under which operations are conducted in Australia and New Zealand.
