London, July 3. The King has conferred the Order of Merit on Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker, the eminent botanist.

Sir Joseph Hooker is one of the great botanists of the world and is now 90 years old. He visited New Zealand in connection with his published account of the " Flora cfc. the Auckland Islands, New Zealand, and Tasmania," as well as the special monograph, " Handbook of the New Zealand Flora." The Order of Merit constitutes the highest honour in the Empire, and so far only 19 persons have received it. Sir Joseph Hooker holds, the Prussian Order Pour lc Mcrite.
