STEAMERS DELAYED.
A strong south-east gaJe set in on luesday night, with heavy rain, the wind going into the southward, and blowing a hard gale. The barometer at the Harbour Board, at eight a.m. yesterday, dropped to 29.20. At four p.m. it had risen.. to 29.41, and. at eight p.m. registered 29.48, and was still rising. •
I Trie Northern Company's steamer Aupouri left . Whangarei for Auckland shortly - after two p.m. on Tuesday, and fell in with the full force of the gale. Making as good time as she could, the steamer was 17 hours in covering the distance to Point Rodney; the wind a*nd sea being extreme- ' ly heavy throughout. After passing Rodney, the wind shifted to the southward, still blowing strongly, and port was not made until yesterday afternoon, after a passage'of nearly 24 hours.
The steamer Kildale, a large cargo steamer, of 2496 tons register, arrived from Valparaiso yesterday afternoon. Coming, i towards the New Zealand coast on Tues- , :; ! day the steamer fell in with the gale, and her passage was somewhat prolonged. The Northern Company's steamer Ngatiawa had a prolonged trip from Taurangti £ owing to the bad weather, not making port until shortly before live p.m. yesterday, instead of seven a.m.
A strong gale was blowing on the west, coast and in the Monukau Harbour yes terday, varying from south-east to southwest. It was anticipated that the s.«. Rotoiti would experience a rough time in making the passage from Onehungu to New Plymouth.
