NEWMARKET borough COUNCIL.

THE fortnightly meeting of the Newmarket Borough Council was held l u < evening. There were present: Messrs. p. Bennett (Mayor). W. Edgerley. (i F. Borgolte. Teed C. Leek. .1. McColl, A. Seecombe, If. Holmes, and Kinder.

Drainage: On the motion of Mr. Kinder, seconded by Mr. Leek, tiro Council approved of. the resolutions pawed at a conference of local bodies on the question of a comprehensive drainage scheme An amendment hy Mr. Secconibe, to the effect thai the outlet Ibo at Tjimaki, rather than at Or.ikei, lapsed for the want of a seconder. The Mayor spoke. i strongly an favour of the proposals of theconference.

Iho Post Oflice: Mr. Teed moved. "That this Council communicate with tho representative for Newmarket, asking him to urge the Govern to expend the money placed on the Estimates some time ago for tho erection of the post office for tho Newmarket Borough. The motion was carried. .Miscellaneous: It wits decided to order 3000 gallons of tar from the <jas Company. The water consumption for the past 14 davs wits reported to have been 802,000 gallons. Mr. Kinder was appointed sinking fund commissioner, in place of tho late Mr. J. M. Laxon.

Tlio public installation of officers in connection with Lodge Aroatea. No. 69. Independent Order of Oddfellows (American Constitution), was held in the Methodist Hall. BirWellhead, on Tuesday evening. There was it, large attendance, including the district officers from Auckland. The ceremony, of in- '■ stalling the local officers Conducted the u.D.G.M:, Bro. S. 0. Holds worth, assisted by Bros. K. Gray. G.W., ; and K. Armigcr, « G.M. The following were the officers':— Tiro. ■' Butler, N.G.; Bro. T. Chapman, V.G.: Bro. P. Wilkinson, permanent secretary; Bro. W. Low, treasurer; Bro. J*. Had field, recording \ secretary; and Bro. 15. llulme, chaplain. The following appointments were mode by the N.G. (Bro. Butler):—Kistht supporter. Bro. J. Mountifield; left supporter, Bro. JR. Osmond; warden, Bro. 15. McLean; conductor. Bro. A. .). McLean; inside guardian, •' Bro. A. Ea&dale; outside guardian, Bra. A. Dingley. The following were selected by the V.G. (Bro. Chapman):—U.S., Bro. W. Jackson; L.S.. Bro. 11. Hilton: H.iS.fi.. Bro. G. P. Grahaine; L.8.5., Bro. T. J. McLean. During the evening musical . items were- contributed r by Messrs. H. Btobbing, W. George. JVliss Lnsworth, and the Birkenhead Methodist Church choir.

FOREIGN MISSIONS. Tho Rev. R. M Laverty (late of Norfolk Island) gave an address .in the ' Pitt-Btrcet. Methodist Church Hall ladt ' evening, tho proceeds of which were in aid of the foreign mission fund. There wan a good attendance. the lecturer taking as his subject "The Story of the Mutineers of tho Bounty,"
