MAORI MARRIAGE CUSTOMS.
[by TELECJRAI'tr. —OWN' COrUIESI'OXDK.Vr.] Dargavcu.e, Tuesday. A cask introducing Maori marriage customs was heard before Mr. R. ;W. Dyer, S.M., at the Magistrate's ■I Court. The Complainant, a' Maori, , was previously ordered to pay £1 ' per week towards the maintenance' of his wife and his children, and he now applied for the cancellation of the order on the grounds: (1) That his: wife had committed adultery; (2) that the marriage was not celebrated before a registrar, but only , a Maori clergyman celebrating; and (5) 1 that the husband had provided for the children. Mr. K. T. Fcild appeared for the com- . plainant, and .Mr. 11. J. Con tea for the wife and children. The Court, was crowded with Maoris, who were much interested in the evidence given. The Maori Committee had invesi tigated the first charge, and had found it , groundless. Considerable evidence was given, mainly hearsay, to which Mr. Coatee objected. The Court dismissed the application on the facts, holding that the Maori was bound by the recent decision of Mr. Justice Chapman on Mauri marriages.
