A PRESS COMMENT.
By Telegraph. Press Association.—Copyright.
London, July 1. Commenting on the manifesto issued by 22 Labour members belonging to the trades union group in the House of Commons, on the subject of preferential trade, the Times condemns the utterly parochial point of view displayed by what it terms this amazing manifesto," and its entire failure to realise the standpoint of the working Iclasses in other parts of the Empire, as well as the "cheap sneers' 'against the bona-fides of the colonies and their spokesmen.
" The Premiers will probably realise that the signatories to the manifesto represent a very small fraction of their country," adds the Times. A CANADIAN MESSAGE. "TOO LONG ASLEEP." (Received July 3. 12.40 a.m.) Ottawa, July 2. Mr. 11. L. Borden, Leader of the Canadian Opposition, in a message to Canadians on the 4Uth anniversary of the Confederation, remarks: "While the question of closer trade relations with the Motherland is of much higher importance to Britain than Canada, yet it is of infinitely greater moment to the Empire's future than some British statesmen I seem to imagine. They have been ; too long asleep, and may have a ; rude awakening."
