AQUATICS.
The Anniversary .Regatta Committee met on Wednesday afternoon last," when the accounts of the regatta of 1907 were, presented by Mr. W. C. Somers, the treasurer. After paying all the prize money in full, and' also the various expenses connected with the regatta,- there was a substantial balance in hand towards the aquatic carnival of 1908. The officials are to be congratulatedupon such a'successful issue, and the Auckland public, who subscribed so liberally to the funds, were cordially thanked in:'. a happy speech by Mr. T. T. Masefield, the chairman of the committee./
The yachting season may now be considered closed, although a few enthusiasts still keep afloat. ; . Most of these, . however,, are owners of launches. '
: The Merlin, Eileen, Mavou'rrieen,.' and Karoro are hauled 'tin on Queen's Parade, Devonport,'"■ while the' Aiiki, Rainbow, Thelma and Daisy are hauled -up at King Edward Parade. ,
Mr. C. Gouk, of Freeman's Bay, has just finished a fine 22ft mullet: boat,', to the order of Mr. Syd. Shaw, of Devonport. The now craft, which was towed ' over on Saturday by the Seagull, has.been hauled up by Mr. Shaw, and is about the .largest of .'.her "class here having a ' beam of Bft. \ It will be remembered that Mr. Gouk is the builder of the Seagull and other boats of this class.' . The .well-known yacht I, Speedwell, lately owned by Mia. W. yA. Wilkinson, commodore of the. North Shore-Yacht- Club, { has been purchased ',■■ by parties in ' Whangarei. The : Speedwell always justified her name, and, no doubt, will .well in Whangarei. She was built by Mr. 0.; Bailey, juu. The annual presentation of prizes by ; 'the : Ponsonby Cruising Club takes place in the clubhouse, St. _ Mary's Beach, ; Ponsoriby, on Friday evening next, "May 31, arid I am sure" will be well patronised, as',' the club is one of the most popular aquatic bodies in Auckland. : \": , .V"'.- "'■ : -". I '.' ' ~ ■■-■'■•;.' '■ Some time ago , I heard of a proposed "Sports Protection Society,". but the"matter seems to .have progressed no.' further. This is a pity,- as a body iof this kind ought to do a lot of good for sport generally in Auckland. > Such a society worked very well in Napier some years ago,' and was very much appreciated" by the members of all sporting and aquatic bodies .there..". I hope .the:promoters of this* society' will- take the matter in hand again and make, a success of it. At. a committee meeting of the Devonport Yacm> Club, 'held last week, it was decided to hold < a " korero " about Juno 14- or 21. 'This ? club is progressing steadily,'* and, . although it is the. junior club in Auckland, it has now a large membership. -. • . , ' - liTNX..' :.
