DR. W. C. ALEXANDER. [BT TELEGRAPH.—OWS COBBESirtJjrnEJfT.] • Wellington'; Friday. > Da: W. C. Alexander, -'who had been in practice in Wellington South for about .1.5 years died at his residence at Revensstreet last night, after a long illness. ' The deceased was born at Greenock in 1854, and graduated' at Aberdeen University. lie was surgeon on board several of theCunard Company's steamers, after receiving his diploma. About 30 years ago he arrived in New Zealand, and for a time he acted as medical officer to the Armed Constabulary. He afterwards practised at Hawera for six ; years/ and then, settled in \ Wellington. He had been in indifferent health for two or three years past and had been obliged to lead a retired life for over a year before his death. Dr. Alexander has left a ! widow and a family of two sons and three daughters. One of his sons is in the Bank of New Zealand and the other is on the staff of the Gear Company. "
DR. E. W. ALEXANDER. We regret to announce the death it Dunedin on Thursday evening of Dr. E. W. Alexander, the proprietor of Ashburn Hall, the only private lunatic asylum in New Zealand and the largest institution of.the kind in Australasia. The late Dr. Alexander was born at St. Helena, of which possession his father was a high official in the time of Napoleon. He studied for his profession at King's College, London, qualified as M.R.C.S. in 1853, and came to. Dunedin in the ship Matoaka in 1863. A number of his fellow passengers (including Dr. Campbell, the first rector of the Dunedin High School) were drowned in the Pride of the Yarra when going up the harbour' from Port Chalmers. He was a great traveller, end had visited most courttries and spoke several languages. Feeling ill. he came to Rotorua about two months ago, but the change did not benefit him, and he returned to -Dunedin. He leaves a widow, a sister of the late Mr. F. J. Moss, and two children (a son and a daughter). The son (Dr. EH. Alexander) is at, present in charge of Ashburn Hall. Amongst other relatives in New Zealand is a nephew, Dr. Vowles, of Ngaruawahia.
