A COOK WHO COULDN'T MAKE BREAD.
PLIGHT OF BARQUENTINE ILMA. [by telegraph.-—own CORRESPONDENT.] : Gisborne, Friday. Writing to a friend in Gisborne," Captain Pppham, late of the barquentine lima, states with reference to that vessel recently signalling that , she was short of provisions, that she -was only short of flour. ~ They had a cook on board who could not.make decent? bread. As fast as it was made it was thrown overboard. The result-was that when .16 days out, and "530. miles off Sydney, the flour was nearly gone, and they only had enough hard bread to last "four days. .The* vessel left Kopu with 2501b of flour. Captain Popham states that he was compelled to "top> a passing ship, as'his crew refused to go on short commons for the rest of the trip. '■'-; ....... '.<:'■
The captain adds that the lima had to contend with fearful weather. For the last half of the passage westerly gales prevailed.
