MOUNT EDEN BOROUGH COUNCIL.
A meeting of the Mount Eden Borough Council was held last evening. The Mayor (Mr. O. Nicholson) presided, and there were also present: Messrs. C.: J. Tunks, C. j Hudson, E. Yates,' R. R. Ross, E. H. Potter, J. Davis, S. G. Burns, R. ■H. Crudge, S. Jacka, J. P. Hooton, and S. Gordon. Tho Loans: The Mayor said that in his first,, scheme, • which " was published in • the Herald of May 10, he had suggested the raising of a loan of £12,000. In that scheme he had . only' allowed for one side of the main ' road being; kerbed and channelled. He had sinco consulted several practical! gentlemen, and he was now of opinion that to .only kerb and" channel; one side of'the road would be false , economy. Ho there- j fore suggested _ that this work - should . be done and certain other roads attended to. | If there wero any- balance over he suggested that it should be spent on the water supplyAccordingly, on the motion of the Mayor, it -was decided to take a poll of ratepayers | on the question:' - ' - • ' ] Water-street Drainage: The Mayor reported that Dr. Mason (chief health officer) j and Dr. J. S. Purdy (the district health offi- ! cer) had inspected the Water-street, drainage i area, and the Health Department had decided to allow the Water-stro&t drainage to drain into the cave, thus settling a longstanding difficulty. Mr. Davis moved that tile work be undertaken , by the Council workmen as soon as the consent of the Rail'way authorities had' been obtained.' ■- The motion was agreed to. -, • , District Fund Account: Tlie Mayor' reported that the district fund account was £754 0s Id in credit, which was very satisfactory for this time of the year. Estimates and Receipts: The estimates and receipts as submitted to the Council for the ensuing year were approved. v Sanitation: Dr. J. S. Purdy wrote asking that" the. sanitary inspector might' make a house to house inspection in \ the borough, and urge all householders to clean yards, arid destroy rats, etc. The Mayor said that immediately on the receipt of the letter an inspection was ordered, and circulars were issued advising people how to act'in the matter. ' Lighting: Upon the recommendation of a sub-committee, it was decided to erect a gas lamp in Chatham-street, and another at • the. corner of Water-street and Mount Eden, Road. , v Requests: Letters were received, from several ratepayers requesting that certain borough streets might be attended to. The letters were. referred to the Streets Committee. . 1 : • Accounts: Accounts amounting to £558 9s Id were passed for payment. > Future Meetings: It was decided that in futuro the Council should meet on Monday overy threo-weeks, the next meeting to be held on Monday, June 17.
